John Donne s A Valediction Forbidding Mourning And...
Love can be quite a difficult topic to write about, expressing oneââ¬â¢s intimate and innermost emotions requires a great level of dedication and honesty. If done correctly, the outcome is truly stunning. John Donneââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"A Valediction: Forbidding Mourningâ⬠and Katherine Philipsââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"To Mrs. M.A. at Partingâ⬠are two masterpieces of this genre. These poems depict the concept of true love so meticulously that the reader cannot help but envy the relationships presented. Perhaps the reason that these works are so effective is due to the fact that they are incredibly similar to each other. Although some differences are present when it comes to structure and gender concerns, the poems share the same theme of love on a spiritual level and show many parallels in meaning. To start off it is important to realize that a spiritual bond is goes much deeper than a personââ¬â¢s surface needs and desires. A spiritual connection is a bond between two souls and i ts intense nature allows it to last even the harshest conditions. The speaker and his wife from ââ¬Å"A Valediction: Forbidding Mourningâ⬠have a relationship that has reached this level as well, ââ¬Å"Dull sublunary loversââ¬â¢ love / (Whose soul is sense) cannot admit / Absenceâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (Donne 13-15). ââ¬Å"Sublunaryâ⬠lovers refers to people whose relationships have not reached a spiritual level.
